What is eclipse?
Eclipse is an IDE, an integrated development environment for different programming languages, but it is generally most used for programming in JAVA. It has countless plugins and an alternative software would be Netbeans.
Don't be confused, eclipse is not a programming language, it is a development environment with which you can program in different programming languages, for example JAVA.
The Eclipse Software Development Kit (SDK) is free and open source software, released under the terms of the Eclipse Public License, although it is incompatible with the GNU General Public License.  It was one of the first IDEs to run under the GNU Classpath and runs smoothly under IcedTea.
